Pick up the whistle in 2027.

How you start, step by step.

  1. 1

    Register your interest.

Registrations for this season have closed. Fill in our form and we will get you set up for 2027.

  2. 2

One face-to-face session, then short online modules.

Free, nationally accredited, no experience required.

  3. 3

    Get out on game day.

Start with Mini football (U8s to U9s) to build your confidence.

  4. 4

    Climb the tiers.

U6 to U12, then U13 to U15, then 16s and up (you need to be 17 for the 16+ grade). A mentor gives you written and verbal feedback the whole way.

Two pathways to follow: Foundation 1 to 2, or the Age Group pathway. We will point you to the right one.

Thinking about it? Some common questions.

Cannot see your question? Send us a message and we will talk it through.

  • Do I need any experience?

None at all. We run free, nationally accredited training, and you learn by doing with plenty of support along the way.

  • How old do I have to be?

You have to be 13 or older to start refereeing, and 18 or older to referee the senior age groups.

  • How much can I earn?

Game rates vary by age group, and members can opt for monthly or annual payments. The more games you do, the more you get paid!

  • Does it cost anything?

Yes. Once you are registered, first-year officials pay a one-off $125 to cover insurance, uniform and membership fees. You earn that money back quickly.

  • Is it a big time commitment?

Not a commitment at all. We have handy availability forms members fill out, and we are flexible around work and other life events. Just let our appointments officers know.

  • Where can refereeing get me?

You get out of refereeing what you put into it. The GCRLRA has seen many members climb the ranks to referee and touch judge in the NRL, NRLW and QRL major competitions, while others keep refereeing for the fitness and pocket money.
